The mention of the umbrella reminded me of Nicholas Crane, whose mountain walk across Europe (Clear Waters Rising) began on the Camino. His umbrella was his main companion most of the time.
I haven't read any of his books... maybe I should! Until I met Sarah, who hikes almost full-time, I was dubious about the value of hiking umbrellas. Now I'm a convert!
